the death nobody warns you about

We say the vow without hearing it. Till death do us part. Everyone nods. Everyone thinks it means stay till the body quits.

It never meant that.

Lyon says the death was the whole point. Two people come together and the job, the actual job underneath the romance, is for both of them to die. Not the bodies. The selves. The part of us that keeps score. The part that has to win the fight, get the apology, be right one more time.

That part cannot survive real union. It was never supposed to.

Here is the thing we all do instead. We feel the honeymoon fade and we panic. We decide we picked wrong. Or we quietly downgrade the whole thing into an arrangement, a contract, two people managing each other for the sake of the kids and the calendar. Lyon has a brutal name for that version. A transactional trade of mutual projection. Two people using each other to feel like the story they already told themselves was true.

We have all been in that version. Some of us are in it right now.

The other way is harder and shorter. You stop trying to steer. You stop trying to win. You let the self that needed to win go under, and you do it at the same time the other person does, and what is left is not you and them anymore.

One ship. One captain. That was always the problem. Two of us fighting for the wheel.

Stop fighting for the wheel.

Let the captain drown.
